Media

What is Media and how is it applied in Filtration?

Media refers to an additive to the filtering process, that takes various forms dependent upon the contaminant/s (Activated Carbon, Coconut Shells, Activated clay, Bio-Media, etc.) that entraps or actively separates suspended materials in either fluids or in air pollutant particles. Encotech utilizes various Media approaches based upon client specifications, contaminants, and effluent specifications in our custom filtration system designs. Encotech not only employs various Media Options in providing filtration solutions but supplies and sells numerous media options for our clients and for changeouts.

Encotech Soil PAC

Soil PAC powdered activated carbon is a lignite coal-based carbon manufactured specifically for use as an adsorptive barrier by removing organic contaminants in contaminated sediments in underwater environments. It has an optimal pore size distribution (micro-to-macro) that has proven to be highly effective for the removal of these compounds in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) concentrations typical in sediment pore water. The broad pore size distribution of NORIT SEDIMENTPURE™ PAC powdered activated carbon is critical forhigh performance as NOM can partially or completely block the pores of more microporous carbons, thereby limiting their adsorptive capacity and performance in this demanding application.

Soil PAC powdered activated carbon is a finely milled, highly adsorptive, free-flowing powder activated carbon which makes it ideal for use as an adsorptive media in PAC-based amendments for in situ sediment remediation projects.

OIL AND GREASE REMOVAL MEDIA

Carbon Service and Equipment Company’s oil and grease removal media is a blend of anthracite and impregnated zeolite. It is a highly versatile and effective filtration medium that can be used in pretreatment, post-treatment, or stand-alone treatment processes. When used as a pretreatment to carbon in oil and grease removal applications, it removes the water soluble organics with up to seven times greater efficiency than carbon filtration alone. Used upstream from activated carbon, can remove emulsified oil that would otherwise blind or block the pores of the carbon granules and inhibit their ability to remove more soluble compounds.

ANTHRACITE
Filtration Media

Anthracite filter media is specifically selected from deep mining sites that yield the highest percentage of carbon.  The water filter media is hydraulically classified to reduce foreign mineral matter and to lower ash content.  The water filtration media is then screened and washed to ensure suitability for water filtration purposes.  Anthracite characteristically produces reliable improvements in turbidity removal, mostly due to better solids holding capacity.  Additionally, low uniformity coefficient media improves flow rates.
